BJJ Classes in CT: De La Riva Guard Sweep & Fireman’s Carry Takedown

In our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Classes in Cromwell CT at the Cage JSA – we are focusing this week on the De La Riva Guard and The Fireman’s Carry Takedown aka The Kata Guruma in Japanese Jujitsu.

The De La Riva Guard is one of the most effective guards for competition BJJ, but also can be used effectively in no gi submission grappling, and MMA. Obviously the gi grip is gone on the pant leg, but grabbing the Achilles in no gi bjj will still give you the same control over the leg. Moreno is one of the best at establishing the De La Riva Guard and dominating with powerful sweeps, and leg drag passes.

Matt Bryers shows the Fireman’s Carry for Jiu Jitsu. The variation I use a sliding fireman’s carry. It’s a bit different than the traditional Judo Kata Guruma, but I find it quicker and more effective.

The fireman’s carry is also found a lot in wrestling and sambo. It is one of the most well known takedowns and is regularly seen in Judo, BJJ and MMA competition.
